What does Yalda mean?

The word “Yalda” comes from Syriac and means “birth”. In pre-Islamic Iran the longest night was seen as a struggle between darkness and light. From the next morning on the days grow longer again, so the night was celebrated as the rebirth of the sun. Its other name, “Shab-e Chelleh” (night of forty), refers to the “great Chelleh”, the first forty days of winter, which start on 1 Dey.

Yalda traditions

In 2022 “Yalda/Chelleh” was inscribed on UNESCO’s list of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, nominated by Iran and Tajikistan.
