What is the Persian calendar?
The Persian calendar — also called the Shamsi, Jalali or Solar Hijri calendar — is the official calendar of Iran. It counts years from the Hijra in 622 CE, but unlike the Islamic lunar calendar it measures them in solar years, so it stays locked to the seasons.
The year starts on Nowruz, the day of the March equinox, which falls on 20 or 21 March. It is considered one of the most accurate calendars in use: the start of the year is determined astronomically rather than by a fixed leap rule, so it barely drifts from solar time over centuries.
The twelve months of the Persian calendar
The first six months have 31 days, the next five have 30. The final month, Esfand, has 29 days — 30 in a leap year. The table shows the Gregorian range for the current year 1405.
| Persian month | Days | Gregorian range |
|---|---|---|
| Farvardin | 31 | 21 March 2026 – 20 April 2026 |
| Ordibehesht | 31 | 21 April 2026 – 21 May 2026 |

Persian years and their Gregorian equivalent
A Persian year always spans two Gregorian years. As a rule of thumb: Gregorian year = Persian year + 621 between Nowruz and 31 December, and + 622 between 1 January and Nowruz.
| Persian year | Gregorian range |
|---|---|
| 1401 | 21 March 2022 – 20 March 2023 |
| 1402 | 21 March 2023 – 19 March 2024 |
| 1403 | 20 March 2024 – 20 March 2025 |
| 1404 | 21 March 2025 – 20 March 2026 |
| 1405 | 21 March 2026 – 20 March 2027 |
| 1406 | 21 March 2027 – 19 March 2028 |
| 1407 | 20 March 2028 – 19 March 2029 |
| 1408 | 20 March 2029 – 20 March 2030 |
| 1409 | 21 March 2030 – 20 March 2031 |
| 1410 | 21 March 2031 – 19 March 2032 |
| 1411 | 20 March 2032 – 19 March 2033 |
How does the conversion work?
Both calendars are converted internally to the Julian Day Number — a continuous count of days with no months or years. The target date is then derived from that number. This avoids the errors you get from simply shifting a date by a fixed number of days.
For the Islamic calendar the tabular Hijri calendar is used. Because the religious calendar depends on the actual sighting of the crescent moon, the result may differ by one day depending on the country.
Frequently asked questions
How do I convert a Shamsi date to a Gregorian date?
Pick the “Shamsi → Gregorian” tab above, open the calendar and select year, month and day. The Gregorian date appears immediately and can be copied with one click.
What is the current Persian year?
The current Persian year is 1405. It began on Nowruz and ends the day before the next Nowruz. Today's date in all three calendars is shown at the top of this page.
When does the Persian new year start?
Nowruz falls on 1 Farvardin, the day of the March equinox, which is 20 or 21 March. The exact moment is determined astronomically and shifts by a few hours from year to year.
How many days does a Persian month have?
Farvardin through Shahrivar have 31 days, Mehr through Bahman have 30. Esfand has 29 days, or 30 in a leap year. A common year therefore has 365 days and a leap year 366.
What is a Persian leap year?
A year is a leap year when 366 days pass between two Nowruz dates. In that case Esfand gains a 30th day. Across a 33-year cycle there are usually eight leap years.
What is the difference between the Persian and the Islamic calendar?
The Persian calendar is solar and stays tied to the seasons. The Islamic calendar is purely lunar with 354 or 355 days, so its months move about eleven days earlier each Gregorian year. Both count from the Hijra, but they are now several decades apart.
How accurate is the converter?
For Persian and Gregorian dates the conversion is exact — it uses the established Jalaali algorithm. For the Islamic calendar the result may be off by one day, because in practice the crescent sighting decides.
Is my input stored anywhere?
